Teaching students how to write well structured paragraphs is a skill that must be taught and practiced. Below are several writing examples from our third graders. What do you think?! How to you teach good writing skills to third graders? To begin with, students were given paragraphs and were asked to fill in the blanks to help them become familiar with the structure of a well written paragraph. WRITING PROMPT: Write a paragraph describing something in space. Remember to include a topic sentence and details in your paragraph. My favorite planet is Mars. One reason why I enjoy learning about this planet is because it _______. This planet is ____________.Another reason why this is my favorite planet is_________________. Mars is a fascinating and mysterious planet. STUDENT RESPONSE: My favorite planet is Neptune. Neptune is 4.5 billion years old. Neptunes mass is 1.0245 x 026 kg. Neptunes location is the milky way.Neptune has over 10 moons. In conclusion Neptune is a great planet. - Jamarion WRITING PROMPT: Write a topic sentence, three supporting details, and a concluding sentence that states ideas that we have learned by observing nature based on their recent reading story about bats. STUDENT RESPONSE: I can learn new things from nature. Scientists made a special cane by watching bats. Scientist invented buildings that stay cool by watching termites mounds. Scientist made a fuel saving car by watching a box fish. We can learn many great ideas from nature. - Addisyn WRITING PROMPT: In each of the fables the characters are faced with a problem. How are the ways they solved their problems alike? Support your answer with clear text evidence.
STUDENT RESPONSE:
In both of the fables, characters use special qualities to solve a problem. The problem in “The Tortoise and the Hare,” was that Hare keeps stealing water from the well. The problom is solved by, Tortise promising he would never steel again. In the fable “The Lion and the Mouse, the problem is that Lion was caught in a hunting net. The problem was solved by mouse chewing threw the net to free the lion. Students in Ms. McMunn's 3rd grade class worked collaboratively to research how other countries celebrate Christmas. This required students to use research skills, collaboration, compromise and inserting their information into a shared Google Slide presentation. We would like for you to VOTE for your favorite group presentation. Please keep in mind that students just started using technology this school year and have come a long, long way with their knowledge and use of technology in the classroom. Please watch each presentation below and then VOTE for your favorite HERE. |
DPI Instructional Technology Facilitator Training Meeting
We continued the meeting by sharing resources and coming up with action plans until our next meeting.
Limestone County School District is surrounded by school districts who are also implementing 1:1 initiatives, but where Limestone beats the others is in realizing the critical importance of having Instructional Technology Facilitators embedded in each school. I credit this forward thinking to our District Technology Director, Karen Tucker and Superintendent, Dr. Tom Sisk.

Gone Google StoryBuilder:
Gone Google Story Builder does is creates a video of your writing process. You can have characters, writers, and etc... You type in the windows what each person or character says and the Gone Google Story Builder builds a video. You can even add music! You really have to try it for yourself to see it.
Ideas for Gone Google Story Builder:
- Great way to teach students the process of writing.
- Great way to visually see a story/writing come to life.
- Great way to Collaborate.

Word Mosaics with Nouns
Word clouds, also called tag clouds or a weighted list, are a visual depiction of the
frequency tabulation of the words in any selected written material, such as lecture notes, a textbook chapter or an internet site. Font size is used to indicate frequency, so the larger the font size, the more frequently a word is used. (https://www.iupui.edu/~josotl/archive/vol_11/no_2/v11n2miley.pdf)
Our next steps once we master using Google Slides (formerly Google Presentations) is to:
- work collaboratively in groups within the classroom on a single Google Slide Presentation
- work collaboratively in groups with students in other classes on a single Google Slide Presentation
- work collaboratively in groups with students in other schools on a single Google Slide Presentation
Ms. English's 3rd grade students worked in collaborative groups using Google Slides to create presentations about National Landmarks. Students learned how to find and add images and edit text. Because of the collaborative nature using Google Slides this activity ranks in the Redefinition part of the SAMR Model.
